Module Outline

This module explores engineering applications of electromagnetism that are relevant to Electrical and Electronics Engineering. The topics include: Coulomb’s law, electric field and potential, applications of electrostatics, Gauss’s law, capacitance, dielectrics, electric current density, resistance, magnetic flux density and magnetic intensity, Ampere’s law, magnetic bearings, magnetic circuits, electromagnets and permanent magnets, Lorentz force, Faraday’s Law, self and mutual induction, transformers, moving coil devices, DC Machines, 3-phase AC systems, rotating magnetic fields, induction machines, linear motors, power in AC circuits, real, reactive and complex power, power factor correction, synchronous machines.

Module learning outcomes

Demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of electric and magnetic fields as well as their relevant applications.

Understand the governing principles in the magnetic field to evaluate the magnetic circuits.

Be able to use electromagnetic simulation software to exploit electric and magnetic fields.

Understand the working principles and be able to operate the DC and AC motors in the lab environment to explore their key features.
