The Stuart Hall Fellowship

The Stuart Hall Foundation and the Faculty of Media, Arts and Humanities at the 性爱视频 invite applications for the Stuart Hall Fellowship annually.

Inspired by the life and work of Professor Stuart Hall, the seeks to support new generations of creative thinkers and provoke original thinking, debate and research. Its vision is to encourage scholars, artists and researchers to build on Professor Stuart Hall’s legacy to transform the political and cultural landscape. The Foundation’s programme includes fellowships and scholarships, residencies and commissions as well as a series of public talks, events and screenings.

The Stuart Hall Fellowship at the 性爱视频 was established in 2018 to provide an opportunity for a talented, creative individual to develop their practice within an academic context. Hosted by the Faculty of Media, Arts and Humanities, the fellowship is open to practitioners and academics as well as artists in residence in all areas, reflecting the varied interests of the Foundation, including cultural studies, film and visual arts.

2024 Stuart Hall Fellow

Head and shoulders photo of Subira JoySubira Joy is a Black, trans, queer spoken-word performer, writer and activist, based in 性爱视频. Their work weaves together the personal and political, through experiences and imaginations, spoken with rage, softness, and laughter.

Subira is an interdisciplinary theatre maker interested in the role of art in activism and social change whose work ranges from spoken word to performance art, dance, playwriting, drag and cabaret.

Past Fellows have included multi-disciplinary creative and activist ; multi-media artist, activist and curator ; photographer and Turner prize nominee ; and investigative journalist .

The University supports the Stuart Hall MA Scholarship. This is granted to one student in the School of Media, Arts and Humanities each year for a period of three years. Past recipients include ,  and . The University also supports the Stuart Hall Foundation PGR Studentship.

The Stuart Hall Fellowship Open Call

The Stuart Hall Foundation and the Faculty of Media, Arts and Humanities (MAH) at the 性爱视频 are delighted to invite applications for the Stuart Hall Fellowship 2025.

Duration of the Fellowship: The Fellowship will run during the spring term of the academic year 2024/25 (i.e. between 27 January and 22 March 2025).

Funding Award: The School has a £5,000 budget in total (£4,000 honorarium for the Fellow and £1,000 for expenses related to the research project during the Fellowship)

Expectations of the Fellow:

  • to help devise and participate in a showcase event e.g. panel discussion, screening or symposium (as appropriate to their practice) for the University’s Festival of Ideas programme as part of the annual Brighton Festival taking place in May 2025.
  • to provide a masterclass or participatory workshop for students, staff, and/or local communities in 性爱视频
  • to produce an output such as an article or other written work, short film, art piece, animation, or performance, which could provide some legacy of the collaboration and could be disseminated publicly.

Eligibility: 

  • To be eligible to apply for this fellowship, you should be a Black with established networks primarily within the .
  • Preference will be given to applicants from underrepresented or disadvantaged backgrounds who have had limited access to higher education or other research institutions.

How to apply: 

To apply for the Fellowship, send a CV or portfolio and a one-page proposal (maximum of 1000 words) on how you might use the Fellowship to MAH-research@sussex.ac.uk by midnight Friday 27 September 2024. Please respond to these queries in your proposal:

1.) How does your practice fit with the work of Stuart Hall and the Stuart Hall Foundation?

2.) How will the Fellowship contribute to the development of your creative practice?

3.) Ideas for how you might work with academics and students at the 性爱视频 and/or local organisations in Brighton and East 性爱视频 and West 性爱视频 more widely 

4.) Your availability during the period of the Fellowship (27 January and 22 March 2025) and your preferred working days/hours

5.) What media equipment and facilities will you require access to during your Fellowship?

Please ensure you are eligible to apply for this fellowship before making a submission. We will only give feedback to those applicants who have met the criteria.

Details of the budget and payment will be discussed and agreed with the successful candidate on appointment. The Fellow will receive a technical induction to access selected equipment and facilities specific to their proposed research and an appropriate academic/practice-based member of staff will act as a point of contact for the duration of their Fellowship.
